I stepped into the garden to get some air, and the cold did me good; for a while I just stood there filling my lungs and puffing out steam and looking up at the stars. Way up there, the little probe Ulysses must have been moving at thousands of kilometers per second and making its way across the solar system, and even at this speed it would take years to reach the Sun, and I thought that in the end it was a kind of mystery guest in the galaxy who never gave up but faced perils considerably more daunting than anything in my way. Looking back through the bay window, I tried to spot her again, and she was talking to the man who’d made her laugh at the beginning, and surely this must be the man with whom she now shared her life, since he was touching her arm in an unmistakable way. What did she want to show me by bringing me here? Her new life? Her happiness? Her unhappiness? I didn’t understand, there was something missing, and I needed to know what it was, I’d gone too far, I couldn’t leave now, no, I couldn’t face the next few hours alone, with no company but the afterimage of a cat frozen in midleap, this had to be avoided, and I resolutely pushed open the sliding door and found myself back in the hubbub and warmth of the party, and I wanted a drink, I wanted several drinks, and I headed for the table while also checking the hallway to make sure my coat was still there; I had a sudden fear that it might have been stolen, or evaporated, and I needed to make sure neither thing had happened, and this couldn’t wait, nothing else mattered, and in the end we only dread what has already invisibly come to pass, and next to my coat the bouquet of white and red roses seemed to be beckoning, as if it wanted to speak, and it was the one thing I could be sure about, the only benevolent thing, at that entire party.
